Derek Wendt is an architectural designer and illustrator. In January 2016, he joined Alliiance while maintaining his independent design services at Derek simply.

Derek studied Architecture and earned his Masters from the University of Detroit Mercy. His work experiences comprised from Walt Disney World Resort, IDEO, Detroit Works Project, Stantec, AIAS, and Katherine Frank Creative, Inc.

In 2012, Derek moved to Minneapolis from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He derived his love of architecture from Legos, SimCity, Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station, and visiting sport stadiums.

Being a deaf architect has helped Derek develop an appreciation for the art of sensorial space planning - which was attributed to his thesis on aural architecture and work at Disney. He continues to be an advocate of artistic design that is impactful to the emotions and the senses.

Outside of work, Derek is a travel enthusiast. You can spot him at musicals, Packer games, microbreweries, bike riding, and mountain climbing. He also enjoys freehand drawing and creating birthday cards.

1. THESIS

I researched the phenomenology of aural architecture for postgraduate thesis. I inventively arranged an urban plan with a supporting exposition of acoustic exhibits.

SYNOPSIS

I have a natural tendency to see sound. I was born profoundly deaf and grew up with hearing aids. I was enrolled at an oral deaf program, learning how to hear and speak. Having the ability to travel to both physical worlds of sound, i.e. deaf and non-deaf, it brought to me a new perception of architecture. I can perceive how architecture is celebrated with and without auditory. This rare cognitive ability gave me a chance to advocate the awareness of acoustic design and aural architecture. Phenomenologically, I can visualize a space, open or occupied, in detail. I enjoy experiencing space pensively in silence, yet find some places unpleasant when the physiological of hearing is activated.

As a deaf person, I am inspired to investigate how sound can be aesthetically influenced and relevant in architecture.

2. BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL MUSEUM

//IN PROGRESS// 80%

Obama's 2008 Presidential run was groundbreaking, largely because of his iconic marketing campaign. The 'O' logo he used was used as the main 1inspiration for the Barack Obama Presidential Library. The railroad wasn't hidden from the design but rather incorporated as the fields in the 'O' logo as viewed from above. Additionally, the railroad openings allow a sense of ongoing movement tying with the idea that a library allows for ongoing learning. Visitors would have the opportunity to walk on the river plaza, street balcony, inner courtyard, and inside the library to view the trains as if you're looking at your mechanical wristwatch. The 'O' would also provide panoramic view of Obama's hometown. The complex design of the exterior screen on the rectangular building represents the connections Obama made to become President.  The uniform glass and long vertical black columns on the 'O' building take those connections and gradually define itself with trust, authority, consistency, and balance.  The library is attractive at all corners, with the bridge stairway, corner ramp at the intersection, train cutout tunnel, and the river perspective, all giving opportunities to enter the site and/or structure.   The whole structure will serve as both a library, community spaces, commercial, restaurant with rooftop garden (to honor Michelle Obama), and, museum to honor American's first African American President.  I believe the structure speaks as a symbol for Barack Obama's current and future legacy. //The project is currently in the final phase.//

3. MINNE BREWERY

A conceptual self-paced project to design the branding and architectural space for an imaginary microbrewery. I found an abandoned mechanic garage on Minnehaha Avenue, and decide to recycle and expand this structure. I like the idea of engaging the community with urban environment, with the outdoor patio and a viewing of the brew process. Minne Brewery took its name from being located on 'Minne'haha Avenue in 'Minne'apolis, 'Minne'sota. Minne also serves as a suffix for beer labels (i.e. MinneHop Hop, MinneSota, MinneHapolis).

5. NONDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH

An integrative studio project to design a non-denominational church in Michigan.  On Revit, I was assigned to formulate site, building, section, HVAC and lighting plans with renderings.  I wanted to design a cross on urban plan, but also to create an invigorating experience with lights and perspectives.``

Derek simply is a freelance graphic shop, utilizing in web design, branding, illustration, and architectural drawings.

Derek disliked purchasing greeting cards, instead created one for his niece's eighth birthday in July 2012. Two months later, he brought his talents to Minneapolis' creative and architecture markets. Missing his family and friends back home in Michigan, he created birthday cards to personally connect with them.  Cards itself became a brand, and broadened the horizon to web design and branding.  It's currently testing the water in children's illustration books, animation shorts, and wedding invitations.
